Semester 2 week 1

- critical study submission

Design work:
- brief given
- Site visit

AT3.1 Result : B-, 59

PECHAKUCHA night-

on inspiration

this event was the same result as the last. very good and very insightful but i was unable to take notes so in the long term was fairly useless other than ideas for how to present work.

Semester 1 Review

WORK REVIEW:
- over all this semester has been vary varied, my design work has been very inconsistent and whilst having to start over with new approaches many times was very educational it did not lead to getting any fully developed schemes at any point.
This however maybe a reflection of my attitude to changes in approach, i felt it would not be a good use of time to develop these initial approaches any further than basics so that i would not have to back track to much when i started over. Hindsight suggests that if i had developed these more so then a new approach may not have been needed.
This has left the current design work from this semester in a highly unfinished state. redesigning the whole scheme a week prior to the final crit meant the project had very little substance. this also means this project will now require finishing over the next semester,

Technology work- as a research project this seemed to go fairly well, even though in comparison to all the other buildings there seemed extremely little information available on the structural and construction details but input from Keith meant that was able to create a rational theory for them, which helped greatly in developing research skills.

Skills Assessment
- Drawing - general sketching has not been greatly improved
- more technical drawings have great improvement in quality, accuracy and speed.
- do any important drawings at least 3 times,

- Handwriting - still poor, effort has not been made to improve it.

- Computer skills -side lined early to focus on physical models and drawings. semester 2 will aim to improve these.

- Reading - A lot has been done for dissertation and technology work. Great at speed reading and able to make detail notes of relevant sections. maybe read slower so more is immediately committed to memory

- Research - greatly improved in speed and efficiency now able to quickly combine internet and library resources to find relevant and variable info.

- Time keeping - i have been making timetables but often i fall behind and then dont stick to them.

- Modeling greatly improved, i have learnt to use a wider variety of materials in combination and have been able to apply them to appropriate scales aswell as produce the models more quickly and efficiently.

PDP review- whilst keeping the pdp as a blog is proving convenient for the most part, easy access, fairly to update, easy to link pictures. Typing up notes has been a problem. this however maybe due to my lack of organisation when it comes to storing my notes before typing them up. in future, i should type them up sooner or scan them all in.

week 15

Week with very little sleep, beginning of the week was spent building the model and the rest was spent on doing drawings in preparation for the crit.
once again i didnt leave myself time to do any vocal preparation for the crit

Thursday
Final crit with Gary and Dennis

feedback sheet not done by either.

No indicative grade was given or hinted at, there was talk of receiving these grades at portfolio review but there has been no set date for a portfolio review
We were advised to not do any more work on this project until we are well into the next project else i would get bogged down in this project and mess up the next project. i will be following this advice considering the difficulties i had in starting this project i dont want to then compound those projects by focusing on another project.

Week 14

beginning of the week was spent drawing up in preparation for thursdays crit, there were no lectures.

thursday
Crit with Bridget and Simon

need to redesign the vast majority of the project in preparation for final crit,

THURSDAY INSIDE OUT LECTURE:

Rod Heyes
of Caruso St John Architects

'All of this has happened before' - BSG quote: proof that all architects are geeks?

- Atmosphere replaces geometry

-> Chiswick house Cafe. very interesting approach to dealing with a historic context. Really interesting roof construction.
* the everyday advertising/branding is unavoidable and will no doubt take away from your efforts, but they aren't permanent.

-> Nottingham contemporary - Gallery
-Seldom moments to create dialogue between interior and the city outside.
- geometry adapted to site constraints to describe the relationship.
- ceiling expresses site relationship.
*Too many ideas!!

'writing the fictions for your architecture' <- make up the context but make it convincing,

Prisca Thielmann
Maccreanor Lavington Architects

Rainham Library and mix use, Essex
-> main site constraints
- grain considerations
- English heritage don't like the imaginary history.

Accordia, Cambridge
- housing estate adjacent to English heritage home

Overview: Lecture was fairly interesting, mainly concerning the fictions that we create to justify our architecture.
Heyes was much more convincing speaker, seemed either better prepared or i was just more interested in what he was saying and the architecture seemed more interesting Thielmann's presentation was fairly unconvincing seemed to convey that the architecture they create is more like picking elements from a catalog and sticking them together to form a building, the only part of the architecture she was excited about was a string of glazed brick that they had been allowed.

week 13

Everywhere was drowned in snow and not much was happening across the country.
There were no lectures planned for the this week
I went to Tutorial on thursday but very few people arrived.
i spent most of the week making a model using mirror glass, after several accidents i had to stop using the mirror glass because i was unable to put pressure on my hand to break the glass.

side note: went sledging for the first time, the snow in littleborough gets much deeper than leeds.

Tuesday, 5 January 2010

Christmas break

The majority of the time was spent at home being very inactive at home,
-revised my topics for my dissertation.
-updated software and downloaded & learnt new software( revit architecture).
-Mostly i wasnt able to do design work because the majority of the work i needed to do was physical modeling which i wouldve been unable to bring back to uni, i did however do some and photograph them, also i purchased the tools i needed to make the models when i got back to uni(glass cutter etc)

Dear Student

RE: AD3.1 Assessment Thursday 14th January

We are aware that you have been under pressure during the last three
weeks due to the requirements and timing of the hand-in for AT3.1. For
many of you this has resulted in you having very little time to develop
your main design projects for AD3.1. In view of this and to recognise
the pressures you have been under we propose the following:

The review date on January 14th remains as timetabled but as a draft
full pin up.

This means that we require you to pin up a complete project which
includes all your early work, research and analysis as well as a
developed scheme/sketches/models etc but it does not need to be fully
presented with finished drawings – sketch plans to scale on the site,
for example, would be acceptable.

It is hoped that there will be external visiting reviewers at the full
draft pin up on 14th January to guide you.

Thursday 7th January will be a Third Year studio day and it is hoped
that all will attend.

In not requiring you to fully present your schemes with finished
drawings, it gives you additional design time to develop your work. The
full draft pin up on 14.01.09 gives you an opportunity to get good
design tutorials and feedback on your design and areas of work which
could be improved. We would aim, in addition to the design feedback, to
list omissions or areas requiring improvement to give you guidance for
your final submission.

As always, remember, in planning your full draft pin up, you are
telling a complete story so plan for a comprehensive narrative of your
work in your display. Your final submission will be the following week.

Thursday 21st January, therefore, becomes the final review and initial
assessment of AD3.1, instead of a portfolio review. (Module AD3.1 will
be re-assessed at the end of Semester 2.)

The draft portfolio review will take place around Easter.

To recap:

Thursday 7th January is a studio day.

Thursday 14th January is a draft full pin up.

Thursday 21st January is the final review and initial assessment of
AD3.1.

Any queries, please e-mail via X-Stream over the holiday.

Broadcasting Place closes on Thursday 24.12.09 and re-opens on 4th
January 2010.

Best wishes for the Christmas Break and for 2010 from the Level 3 tutors.
